Exercising While Pregnant

Is it really safe to exercise with a bun in the oven?

In a short answer, yes, it is healthy to exercise while pregnant. In fact, there are many benefits that result from exercising during your pregnancy. One of the major benefits is that staying active during pregnancy reduces the likelihood of requiring a C-Section during labor. Some other benefits include:

  • Reduced back pain

  • Decreased Constipation

  • Decreased risk of gestational diabetes

  • Reduced risk of preeclampsia

  • Promotes healthy weight gain during pregnancy

  • Improved ability to lose baby-weight following pregnancy

Now, not every scenario is the same. There are special considerations that must be discussed with your primary health care provider and obstetrician about the type of exercise you should and should not do while pregnant. Listed below are some of those considerations:

  • Avoid jerky, bouncy, or high impact movements

  • Avoid becoming overheated

  • Avoid standing still as this can cause blood to pool in the legs and feet resulting in decreased blood pressure and possible dizziness

  • Avoid lying flat on your back as this can cause the uterus to press on a large vein that returns blood to the heart

  • Avoid contact to the abdomen

  • Avoid hot yoga or hot pilates

  • Avoid heavy lifting

  • Avoid heavy overhead movements

  • Avoid Deadlifts as this compresses the abdomen

After speaking with your health care provider and determining if exercise is healthy for you during your pregnancy, here are the recommendations:

  • If you were active before pregnancy, try to continue the same exercise routine so long as you avoid the scenarios listed above

  • 150 minutes each week of moderate aerobic exercise is encouraged

  • Drink more water as you have an increased risk of dehydration

  • Limit your risk of falling

Exercise is generally safe for pregnant women but always consult with your primary health care provider before starting an exercise program.
